Chapter Fourteen

Quinn ran her hands over her navy skirt and adjusted the strap of her handbag on her shoulder. She lifted her hand and knocked firmly on Lauren’s door, her heart thudding in her chest.

Quinn had taken her time putting this deal together, making sure the numbers made sense, and also getting her pitch together. This was her last shot at this. If Lauren turned this down, Quinn didn’t know what she’d do.

Quinn was ready to knock again when no one answered. She glanced behind her at the sun sinking lower in the sky. Maybe Lauren was at work or out with a friend. She ignored the burning sensation in her chest when she thought of Lauren on a date with someone else. That would be Quinn’s own fault if that was where Lauren was. She’d been the one to put a stop to things.

The door opened, and Lauren stood there in white shorts and a black tank top, her straight hair falling across her shoulders. “Hey.”

“Hi.” Quinn swallowed. She couldn’t quite decipher Lauren’s expression. There was definitely a hint of surprise, but hopefully Lauren was glad to see her. She had no idea though. More than two weeks had gone by since they’d had that intense moment in Quinn’s office, and they hadn’t spoken since.

“I assume you have another offer for me,” Lauren said, leaning against the doorframe.

“I do.”

“Why don’t you come in?”

Lauren took a step back, and Quinn followed her inside. Right now, this was all business. There were no signs that anything else had passed between them, and Quinn should have been grateful for that, but she couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed. She had to keep reminding herself that this deal was the most important thing right now. Quinn could ask Lauren out when this was all over.

“Have a seat,” Lauren said, directing her towards the living room. “Do you want a drink?”

“No. Thanks. I’m fine for now.” Quinn sat down, sliding the contract out of her bag and handing it to Lauren as she sat down beside her. Quinn tried to relax, but she knew her jaw was clenched, that her whole body was probably tense. She had to do this right, but she couldn’t come across as desperate either.

Lauren left the contract on the table without flipping through it. Quinn glanced between the thin stack of papers and Lauren, wondering what she was missing. If Lauren wasn’t interested, why had she invited her in?

Lauren smiled. “You look petrified.”

Quinn exhaled. “Maybe I am. This is the absolute best that I can do.”

“Alright.” Lauren looked so relaxed as she crossed one leg over the other. “I’m in.”

Quinn blinked. “You are?”

“Yes. I’ve been thinking about everything you said. About what living here will be like as the weeks go on. Your offers have been generous, as I’m sure this one is, and I know what this project means to you and your family. I don’t want to stand in the way of that.”

Quinn laughed. What else could she do? She should have held her ground.
